International operational law

International operational law

Genocide, biological warfare, torture. Where is the limit of state sovereignty, and in which situations must the international community act? International law regulates when and how states and the global community may intervene, for example when human rights are violated or when the laws of war are no longer respected.

What is international operational law?

International law is the body of law that governs the rights and obligations of states and other international actors in relation to one another. It encompasses the law of the UN Charter, the laws of war, and human rights.

International law consists of conventions and treaties that regulate how states should act towards one another, towards other international bodies, and towards individuals. Examples include the Geneva Conventions, the Hague Conventions, and the European Convention on Human Rights.

International operational law in war and peace

At the Swedish Defence University, international law is studied from a crisis and conflict perspective. This means a focus on the lawful use of military force, on human rights in armed conflicts, and on issues of responsibility during humanitarian disasters or in peace operations.

When is international law applied?

International law is applied in international relations and is used in both international politics and international trade. Knowledge of international law is essential in diplomacy, in foreign and defence policy, and in international organisations and courts.

Our programmes address current crises and conflicts, and as a student you will test the legal framework against real-world events. At the Swedish Defence University, you can earn a Bachelor’s degree in Law with a specialisation in International Law. You also have the opportunity to obtain a one-year Master’s degree in Law with a specialisation in International Operational Law. The Master’s programme also gives you the chance to specialise further before pursuing doctoral studies in Law.

International operational law

In a short seminar, Professor Jann Kleffner and Deputy Head of Department Marika Ericson will talk about the Swedish Defence University's master's programmes. The programme focuses on the legal space for states and other actors linked to crisis management, defence and security, from peace, crisis and armed conflict.
