Open seminar: Everyday Security in Militarized Spaces in Latin America

How does militarization affect women's everyday lives and experiences of security? And how do transnational anti-feminist movements shape security politics in Latin America? Welcome to a seminar with Elsa Rodríguez and Alessandra Jungs de Almeida.
At this seminar, two researchers affiliated with the Centre for Gender, Peace & Security (CGPS) will present their ongoing research on gender, militarization and security in Latin America.
Women's everyday lives in a militarized Rio de Janeiro
Elsa Rodríguez will present her project Women, Militarisation and Everyday Security: Experiences of Urban Space after Operação Contenção in the Complexo do Alemão in Rio de Janeiro.
The project examines how women experience and navigate a militarized urban environment following Operação Contenção in the Complexo do Alemão in Rio de Janeiro. It focuses on how militarized policing affects women's mobility, access to urban spaces and everyday experiences of safety and insecurity.
Elsa Rodríguez is a student of Urban Studies at Malmö University and an intern at the Centre for Gender, Peace & Security (CGPS) at the Swedish Defence University during autumn 2026. She holds a BA in Latin American Studies from Stockholm University and is a co-founder of the decolonial feminist organisation Voz Latam in Stockholm.
Anti-feminism and security politics in Latin America
Alessandra Jungs de Almeida will present her project Transnational Anti-Feminism and Security Politics in Latin America: International Norm Disputes, Backlash, and Feminist Resistance in Militarized Contexts.
The project examines how transnational anti-feminist norms circulate, are adapted and resisted, and shape security politics in militarized contexts in Latin America. It explores how anti-gender discourses circulate through religious networks, political actors, digital platforms and technological entanglements. The research also examines transnational feminist resistance.
Alessandra Jungs de Almeida is a Wallenberg Postdoctoral Researcher at the Centre for Gender, Peace & Security (CGPS), Department of War Studies, at the Swedish Defence University. She is also affiliated with the Data + Feminism Lab at MIT and holds a PhD in International Relations from the Federal University of Santa Catarina (UFSC), Brazil.
