Open seminar: New book Defiant Intimacies: Sustaining Life amidst War and Displacement

On November 6, we welcome Ahmad Qais Munhazim from Thomas Jefferson University in Philadelphia, USA, to discuss his new book, Defiant Intimacies: Sustaining Life amidst War and Displacement.
The book explores how love, friendship, and community help Afghans in Afghanistan and in other countries carry on with their lives despite war and forced displacement.
Defiant Intimacies focuses on tenderness and close relationships, particularly in the lives of Afghan men. Over the past four decades, Afghan men have often been portrayed as dangerous, terrorists, fighters, and violent. The book highlights other aspects of their lives and explores love, friendship, and intimacy in everyday Afghan life through queer and feminist perspectives. It is a love letter to the care, loyal friendships, hospitality, and joy of Afghans—qualities that are often overshadowed by narratives of war and violence.
Ahmad Qais Munhazim, an Afghan, Muslim and perpetually displaced, is an Associate Professor of Global Studies at the Thomas Jefferson University in Philadelphia. As an interdisciplinary scholar, de/colonial ethnographer and community activist, his work troubles border of academia, activism and art. Munhazim’s work has been published in International Politics, International Feminist Journal of Politics, Journal of South Asian Studies, Critical Studies on Security, Kohl: A Journal of Body and Gender and others. Currently, Munhazim is preparing his book manuscript based on a de/colonial ethnography of intimacies among Afghans in Afghanistan and its diasporas.
