Two new centres for the defence capability of the future

The Swedish Defence University has established two new centres: the Centre for Capability Development and Innovation and the Centre for Total Defence Logistics.

The purpose of these centres is to strengthen research, education and collaboration in areas that have become increasingly important in a changing security environment. Both centres will contribute to developing knowledge that enhances Sweden’s ability to manage crises and, ultimately, war.

“In a more uncertain security environment, there is a need for settings where knowledge can be developed and put into practice rapidly. These centres are important steps in meeting those needs while also increasing the quality and relevance of research and education”, says Robert Egnell, Vice-Chancellor of the Swedish Defence University.

Bringing together research, education and collaboration

The two centres have different areas of focus but are based on the same core idea: to bring together expertise from several disciplines and create a shared platform where research, education and practice meet.

The Centre for Capability Development and Innovation focuses on how military and civilian capabilities are developed, from organisation and leadership to technology and innovation.

The Centre for Total Defence Logistics focuses on logistics and supply chains in times of crisis and war, an area that has gained greater importance through NATO membership and the experiences of the war in Ukraine.

Greater collaboration and impact

Both centres will strengthen the Swedish Defence University’s collaboration with external stakeholders, such as government agencies, industry and international partners.

“The goal is to be an obvious partner on issues relating to capability development, where research, education and practical needs come together”, says Rickard Stridh, Colonel and military teacher at the Department of Systems Science for Defence and Security, who has been appointed Director of the Centre for Capability Development and Innovation.

In the field of logistics, this includes understanding how the entire chain functions, from global deliveries to the operational and tactical levels.

“Logistics is crucial to both military and civilian capability. We need to bring together expertise and work jointly to meet the new requirements”, says Per Skoglund, Senior Lecturer in War Studies and Director of the Centre for Total Defence Logistics.

Focus on practical benefit

The centres will initiate and develop research, contribute to education and create forums where researchers and practitioners can exchange experience.

An important objective is to strengthen the link between theory and practice, and to ensure that new knowledge is put to concrete use in the development of total defence.

Launch in spring 2026

The Centre for Total Defence Logistics was established on 15 March 2026 and the Centre for Capability Development and Innovation on 1 April 2026. Both centres are initially being established for a period of three years and will be evaluated ahead of any possible continuation.
