Student on studying political science at the Swedish Defence University
“The focus on crisis management and security is incredibly interesting”
Without a military background but with a strong interest in security policy, Olivia chose to study political science at the Swedish Defence University. Here she talks about encountering the military world, the sense of community at a small and specialised university college – and why Stockholm adds an extra dimension to her studies.
Why should one study political science at the Swedish Defence University?
– The focus on crisis management and security! I think it is a wise specialisation to choose, and above all a very interesting one. I do not have a military background myself, and studying at the Swedish Defence University gives you a solid understanding of military thinking through war games and other practical exercises. I am convinced that this understanding will only become more and more important given the current international security situation.
What has been particularly good about studying at the Swedish Defence University?
– The programme and everyone I have met have been excellent, and I also appreciate the opportunity to study something so relevant here in Stockholm. Being able to say that you study at the Swedish Defence University carries additional weight in these contexts.
– For me, coming from outside Stockholm, it has also been fantastic to be so close to decision-making and to Sweden’s security policy arenas. Being in the capital has given us the opportunity to attend exciting events that broaden our perspectives on what we learn at FHS, as well as to gain valuable experience through relevant part-time jobs.
– I believe those kinds of opportunities are harder to find outside Stockholm.
Has anything surprised you during your studies?
– You almost become a bit of a military enthusiast, whether you intend to or not. Over the past two years, Krigshistoriepodden has been my most-played podcast, and that was definitely not the case before I started studying at the Swedish Defence University!
– It says something about how easy it is to become immersed in the environment here and to feel that you are part of something special.
– Another fun thing is that, quite suddenly, you realise that you are starting to know many of the impressive people who both study and work at the university. That is one of the strengths of the Swedish Defence University being small and specialised – it creates a close and engaged community.
In your view, what is a typical student at the Swedish Defence University like?
– Ambitious, certainly, but in a balanced way. Overall, people tend to have quite different backgrounds and experiences, but everyone is interested in security policy and enjoys spending time with others who share that interest. Students at the Swedish Defence University are also very kind and friendly, and the feeling is that we’re in this together!
