Marcel Mangold joined the Swedish Defence University in March 2020 as Associate Senior Lecturer in War Studies and became a Senior Lecturer in 2024. In 2024, Marcel held a Taiwan Fellowship.
Marcel obtained his Ph.D. in political science at Södertörn University College in 2018. During 2019, he held a position as a lecturer in political science at the Department of Political Science at Örebro University. He has also taught political science at Stockholm University. During his Ph.D., he spent two years at the Johns Hopkins University as visiting graduate student with a Fulbright grant.
Marcel’s research explores organizational culture and military change in modern armed forces. Other research interests are civil-military relations, cultural understandings of technology, whole-of-society defense, and how armed forces relate to environmental issues. Marcel is currently researching defense build-ups in Sweden and Taiwan.
Before becoming a war studies scholar, Marcel published several political scientific publications that explored embodied experiences and emotions in democratic politics. In his dissertation, he conducted a genealogical study on the Swedish state's efforts in 1980-2014 to securitize democracy through the standardization of democratic citizen habits and values.
Marcel’s most recent publications are with journals such as Armed Forces and Society, Critical Military Studies, and Prospects and Exploration.
