The Academic Writing Service
Do you find course work challenging? Are you unsure what the word “analyse” actually means? Do you need to improve your academic style?
The Academic Writing Service at SEDU provides lectures, workshops and one-to-one consultations in study skills, academic writing and oral presentations. All students and programme participants are welcome to book consultations or join our other activities.
Provides help with all aspects of course work
We help you improve your academic study and writing skills and offer a range of activities to help you achieving your goals. This includes planning, reading, note-taking, referencing, writing and delivering presentations.
One-to-one consultations
As a student you are entitled to three individual 45-minute sessions per term focusing on study skills, writing, or oral presentations. You book your consultation through the learning platform (LMS ) Canvas.
Book sessions in Canvas
There are two separate course rooms in Canvas. Book your consultation in the room Språkverkstad. (The room Språkverkstad HOP is reserved for the Joint Advanced Command and Staff Programme (HOP)).
Can’t find your course space in Canvas? Contact librarian martin.gurak@fhs.se at the Anna Lindh Library.
Consultations are presently held via Zoom or in the Anna Lindh Library (the workshop room named “Bletchley Park”).
A consultation may address any aspect of academic literacy, such as:
- creating a weekly study plan
- reviewing an exam text before submission
- discussing the structure of a thesis chapter
- practising an oral presentation.
No proofreading
Before a session, you can submit a text, including work that will later be handed in for assessment. We do not correct or proofread texts – our focus is to provide you with strategies that enable you improve as a student and a writer. We never read a whole thesis – in your booking, please point out what aspects of your text you want us to focus on.
Drop-in sessions
Every Wednesday between 12 am and 2 pm, staff from both the Academic Writing Service and the Anna Lindh Library hold joint drop in sessions in the room Bletchley Park in the library. We answer questions about study techniques, database search, reading and writing and also provide “on the fly” feedback on shorter texts.
Help for students with study difficulties
Do you find studying more challenging than your classmates do? Our tutors are qualified to support students with disabilities that can impact their academic performance, such as dyslexia or neuropsychiatric conditions. In a one-to-one consultation, we can find ways to make your study situation more easy and effective. You do not need any medical documentation to receive this support.
Tailored workshops
We also provide lectures and workshops on academic reading and writing in collaboration with specific courses or programmes. If you see the need for such a workshop for you and your classmates, please contact academicwriting@fhs.se or ask your teacher to do so.
