Military PhD studies

To become a military PhD student at the Swedish Defence University or one of the partner institutions of the Research School for War and Defence, you will have to apply to a PhD programme.

Funding

There are two main ways to fund your PhD studies: internal or external funding.

Internally funded PhD student positions: An internally funded PhD student position is a position that is fully funded by the university, including salary. These positions are open to all. When there are internally funded PhD student positions, our partner institutions advertise the positions on their homepages.

Externally funded PhD student positions: An externally funded PhD student position is a position where the PhD student’s employer allows the employee to undertake doctoral studies during working hours (at least 50% of the time). The rules and application process are different depending on the institution.
